The Malcolm Shiraz
Current Release: 2017 – the first Malcolm made from our first Estate vineyard in the Ebenezer sub-region of the northern Barossa Valley.
We first made this ‘cult’ Shiraz back in 1994. It became a legendary wine and with the follow on 1995 and 1996 releases, spawned a host of powerful, rich Shiraz wines.
Our goal has always been push the boundaries of Shiraz, to pick ultra-ripe and then age in new oak for a longer maturation period. Importantly the final wine, though rich and full-bodied, must be complex and extremely well balanced.
The nose offers up hugely ripe fruit aromas – black cherry and plum, alongside toasty mocha oak, liquorice and spice. Rich and textured with a velvety palate.
This is a full-bodied wine but the tannins are super-ripe. Incredibly voluptuous and drinkable as a younger wine, it has become famous for its longevity. With good cellaring, The Malcolm can age well for up to 20 years or even longer.
The Malcolm Shiraz is only released in the finest vintages in a small volume. This ensures that the highest quality standard is maintained, and the reputation for capturing the true essence of Barossa Shiraz upheld.
The design on The Malcolm bottle is beautifully etched in the glass and wonderfully presented in this timber box (complimentary with 6 bottle purchase), enabling collectors to store the wine for many years to come… if it’s possible to wait that long!

2017 The Malcolm Shiraz – GOLD
Rated #9 of 171 2017 Shiraz from Barossa Valley
“Very deep, dense red/purple colour, with a massively oaky bouquet, loads of coffee-mocha, and some vegetal and floral high-notes. It seems overripe and over-the-top, at first. The palate is massive: very rich, dense and full-bodied, with ample tannins and alcohol warmth. Blackberry jam, vanilla, chocolate. A big, rich, round, gutsy shiraz with amplitude rather than elegance. So concentrated and ripe it’s almost like an essence. Very impressive, and delicious in its way. (The Malcolm’s first release was 1994, but this is the the first from the Small Town Vineyard in Ebenezer. 110 dozen made.)
